Sarai Kale Khan shelter home is near the railway station and interstate bus terminus, the location is strategically important for forthcoming G-20 events, which will be held in September this year.
The Supreme Court on Wednesday said it would look into rehabilitating the inhabitants of the shelter home which has now been demolished, relocating them elsewhere.
On Wednesday morning, Delhi Development Authority (DDA) demolished the Sarai Kale Khan area shelter home amid heavy security.
The city earlier asked Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) to move the Sarai Kale Khan shelter home amid concern that miscreants and criminals are using it. People who stay in the shelter home do not undergo a strict background check.
Meanwhile, after activists came to know that the shelter was to be demolished on Wednesday, they mentioned the matter at the Supreme Court. However, by the time the court had taken up the matter, demolition had already taken place.
About 54 people were using the night shelter, including women and children.
"Nothing can be done now at this stage. If it is demolished, we must now consider the rehabilitation question...The urgency element has gone away," the bench of Justices Hrishikesh Roy and Dipankar Datta said.
The matter would be heard on 22 February.
