Morbi Bridge Collapse Report Says Cables Were Broken Before Tragedy

The 140-year-old bridge over the Machchhu River in Gujarat state collapsed on October 30, killing 135 people.
In its ‘Preliminary Report on Morbi Bridge Incident', India's Gujarat state government-appointed probe team says that nearly half of the wires on one cable were corroded; what's more, old suspenders were welded with new ones, a major culprit in last year's Morbi Bridge tragedy.
Namely, the report suggests 22 of the 49 cables were corroded.
As per the report, the main cable on the upstream side of the river had snapped, which led to the deadly catastrophe.
Last year the state government set up the five-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) team, which submitted its report in December; it was later shared by the state government with the Morbi Municipality.
So far, the Oreva group that
carried out maintenance on the Morbi suspension bridge is allegedly found to be at fault for the tragedy.
In many state government reports, the state government stated that Oreva group had failed to maintain the bridge properly. Also, it failed to limit the number of people on the bridge and the unrestricted sale of tickets.
The Morbi bridge was closed for renovation for about eight months and had reopened on October 24, a week before the tragic incident.
