Indian federal agencies are probing financial irregularities in the formulation and execution of the now-rolled back Excise Policy introduced by the Delhi government in 2021.
India's federal economic intelligence agency, the Enforcement Directorate (ED), on Thursday quizzed Bibhav Kumar – personal secretary to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) head and Delhi state chief Arvind Kejriwal.
The latest development is related to an ongoing investigation into a now-scrapped liquor policy introduced by the AAP-led Delhi government.
The probe started in August 2022 after Delhi Lieutenant Governor (LG) V.K. Saxena suggested that the policy violated the rules. The Delhi government rolled back the policy in July 2022.
The agency arrested Magunta Raghava Reddy, son of parliamentarian Magunta Srinivasulu Reddy, on February 10 in connection with the case.
So far, nine people have been arrested in the case, including Reddy.
Delhi deputy state chief Manish Sisodia is one of the accused in the case. He, along with other officials, has since August 2022 been questioned by the federal agency.
The liquor policy was introduced by the AAP government in November 2021. Under the policy, the government had plans to open 800 liquor shops across the city. Licenses were issued to private businesspeople, while government shops were shut. Several raids have been conducted as part of the probe since last August.
