Two Pakistani Soldiers Killed in Militant Attack in North Waziristan
20:35 27.02.2023 (Updated: 09:14 28.02.2023) Pakistan has witnessed a surge in militant attacks since November, when the outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP*) unilaterally ended its ceasefire with the federal government.
Two Pakistani soldiers were killed in a gunfight with militants in the North Waziristan tribal district, the army said in a statement on Monday.
"On 26 February, an exchange of fire took place between terrorists and security forces in the general area of Spinwam, North Waziristan district. Own troops effectively engaged the terrorists' location," the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Pakistan military's media department, said.
The ISPR further stated that two militants were also killed in the exchange between the two sides while two more were captured alive. Additionally, a large cache of arms was recovered from the area.
The army likewise said that forces were combing the site to find out if other militants were still hiding in the area.
"[The] Pakistan Army is determined to eliminate the menace of terrorism and such sacrifices of our brave soldiers further strengthen our resolve," the statement added.
The latest attack on Pakistan's security forces comes at a time when the South Asian nation has seen an escalation in militant attacks across the country.
Earlier this month, more than 100 people lost their lives after a suicide bomber blew himself up in a Peshawar mosque in a high-security zone of the city. The dead included scores of policemen who were performing their afternoon prayers.
Similarly, the headquarters of the Karachi Police came under attack ten days ago, leading to the deaths of three attackers and four Pakistani paramilitary personnel.
Pakistani agencies have accused the TTP of being behind the rising number of attacks and believe that they are using Afghan soil to launch them.
Last week, Pakistan's Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif visited Kabul to discuss the matter with Taliban** authorities.
Later, a press release from the Pakistan Foreign Ministry said that the Taliban has promised not to allow Afghanistan to be used against Pakistan.
