The incidence of kidney stones in India is rapidly increasing, with an estimated 10-12 percent of the population suffering from it.
Doctors at the Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology (AINU) in India's Telangana state have successfully removed 300 kidney stones from a 75-year-old farmer who, over the preceding few months, had been suffering from severe discomfort in his back and sides.
The patient, Ram Reddy from the Karimnagar district, underwent ultrasound and computerized tomography (CT) scans through which a massive stone of more than 7 cm in size was detected in the right kidney.
The situation was aggravated by the fact the huge stone was comprised of 300 multiple stones.
The doctors had to perform the surgery on the elderly patient, who has various chronic diseases like diabetes, hypertension, and cardiac issues.
Dr. Mohammed Taif Bendigeri, a consultant urologist at AINU, told Indian media that the removal of all 300 kidney stones was quite painful, but they managed to do it by performing a keyhole incision of merely 5 millimeters (mm) with advanced laser technology.
The patient recovered quickly, and on the second day of the surgery, he was discharged from the hospital.
