In the previous Karnataka state assembly polls held in 2018, the government was formed by an alliance of the Janata Dal (Secular) and Congress parties. However, it collapsed after several members of both the parties resigned. Later, the federally ruling BJP formed the government. Now elections are scheduled to be held in May this year.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday opened the Bengaluru-Nidagatta-Mysore expressway and lay the foundation stone for various development projects in poll-bound Karnataka.
According to media reports, the development projects in the state's Mandya and Hubballi-Dharwad districts are worth INR 160Bln ($1.95Bln).
During what is his first visit to Mandya - though he has visited poll-bound Karnataka six times this year - Modi laid the foundation stone for key road projects.
Later the prime minister is due to launch and lay the foundation stone for various development projects in Hubballi-Dharwad districts.
He will also launch the Bengaluru-Mysore Expressway, a six-lane project of the Bengaluru-Nidaghatta-Mysore section of NH-275. The 118km project developed at the cost of at least INR 84.8Mln ($1Mln) is likely to reduce the travel time between Bengaluru and Mysuru from around three hours to about 75 minutes.
In addition to this, Modi will lay the foundation stone for the 92km four-lane highway from Mysore to Khushalnagar. The key project will cost INR 41.3Mln ($500,000) and should halve the time it takes to get from Kushalnagar to Bengaluru from five hours to only 2.5 hours.
After launching the development projects in Mandya, the Prime Minister will visit Dharwad to open the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). The institute's foundation stone was laid by Modi in February 2019 and it has been developed at a cost of INR 8.5Bln ($100 Mln).
Later, he will dedicate the longest railway platform in the world at Sri Siddharoodha Swamiji Hubballi railway station to the nation. The Guinness Book of World Records has already recognized this 1,507 meter long platform recently.
The areas Modi is visiting and where he is launching several projects are said to be opposition party strongholds in the state, and Prime Minister’s visit to these regions is likely to play a key role in BJP’s electoral campaign.
The elections in the state are slated to be held in May 2023.
