Embracing the Asian Century: Sino-India Ties Caught Positive Momentum Since Last Year, Beijing Says
Beijing ranks among New Delhi’s biggest trading partners: bilateral trade between the two crossed the $100 billion mark for the first time ever in 2021.
Bilateral ties between New Delhi and Beijing have “caught positive momentum” since last year. amid sustained high-level contacts between the leaderships, China’s Charge’d Affaires in India Ma Jia says.
As per a statement by the Chinese embassy in India on Thursday, Ma said that the current border situation between the two countries was “overall stable”.
“The two sides continue to maintain communication via diplomatic and military channels, promoting the transition of the border situation to normalized management and control at the earliest date. China and India’s bilateral trade continues to grow,” said the top Chinese diplomat in New Delhi.
She added that Beijing also always handled Sino-India ties from a “strategic” and “long-term perspective”.
Beijing has yet to name a full-time ambassador to New Delhi after previous envoy Sun Weidong was appointed as the vice foreign minister.
Working Towards De-Escalation in Ladakh
Despite “some difficulties” in view of the military standoff in the eastern Ladakh region, Beijing would like to push the ties back on the track of “healthy and steady development”, Ma said.
The Indian Foreign Minister said last week that “substantial progress” has been made in de-escalating the standoff in Ladakh
through the disengagement of troops, although he cautioned that the situation still remained “fragile" and “quite dangerous” in certain areas.
Nearly 60,000 Indian and Chinese troops are involved in a standoff in two areas, the Demchok and Depsang Plains.
Ma underscored that as two developing nations, both New Delhi and Beijing remained committed to the path of “multilateralism” in global affairs and “defend the interests” of the developing nations.
“China and India share the same or similar positions on many regional and international issues, and have extensive common interests in South-South cooperation, development and poverty reduction, climate change, and energy security,” the Chinese diplomat underlined.
She said that Beijing backed New Delhi in fulfilling its mandate as the president of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) as well as G20.
“We believe that China and India could find a way for neighboring major countries to live in peace and develop together, so as to realize the Asian Century,” she stated.
Ma's remarks come against the backdrop of Chinese president
Xi Jinping's visit to Moscow which concluded on Wednesday. Both countries have vowed to strengthen strategic cooperation toward the creation of a "multipolar world".
Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang was in New Delhi this month to attend the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (FMM).
During a bilateral meeting with Jaishankar, Qin stressed upon the need to enhance multilateral cooperation between the two nations besides discussing bilateral ties.
