SCO Decries Western Undermining of UN-Based Order With New Arbitrary 'Rules'
India currently holds the chair of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). New Delhi says its focus is on economic “rejuvenation” of the region through enhanced connectivity.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) has criticized ongoing efforts to undermine the United Nations (UN) and international law through self-imposed "rules", a veiled reference to the so-called "rules-based international order" often pushed by the West.
Delivering a keynote address at the International Conference on Shanghai Cooperation Organization: Reconnect - Rejuvenate, March 23-24 in New Delhi, SCO’s Deputy Secretary General Ambassador Gregory Logvinov said that the regional countries must resist these efforts through greater coordination.
"The human community has entered a period of global transformation, during which a new multipolar world order is crystallizing," he said.
He noted that interstate relations were rapidly deteriorating in view of the "tectonic tremors splitting the international community."
Logvinov called upon SCO states to “stop these destructive processes” and prevent the international situation from passing a “point of no return”.
SCO Becomes 'Centre of Attraction' for Other Countries
Noting the growing interest of other countries in the SCO, Logvinov stated that the organization was becoming a “center of attraction” for nations wanting to avoid geopolitical confrontation.
He said that a growing number of countries don’t want to be "commanded" through social or political standards which are alien to their civilizational or cultural ethos.
He underlined that SCO’s working was guided by the principle of "Shanghai spirit", which advocates mutual respect and complete equality for all countries.
The SCO currently comprises eight countries—Russia, India, China, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
Iran’s President Ebrahim Raesi is scheduled to attend the SCO Leaders’ Summit in New Delhi as a fully-fledged member later this year. Belarus is also expected to become the tenth member of the Beijing-based grouping.
SCO Facing Consequences of Geopolitics
Addressing the conference, Dammu Ravi, secretary (economic relations) of India’s Ministry of External Affairs said that all the countries in the region were facing the “collateral damage” of ongoing geopolitics.
Ravi said that regional cooperation was important to counter geopolitical headwinds.
He added that New Delhi was involved in efforts to improve connectivity in the region, which would ultimately lead to economic integration.
Many countries in the Global South have been adversely affected by rising food and fuel prices due to western efforts to phase out Russian commodities from the global supply chains.
