Section 144 (prohibiting gatherings of more than four people) of the Indian Penal Code was imposed in West Bengal after violent clashes erupted during a religious procession on the occasion of Ram Navami on 30 March.
The division bench of the Calcutta High Court headed by acting Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam on Tuesday has asked the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government to file a report on fresh clashes in the Rishra area in Hooghly district of the state.
The court's instruction came after lawyers representing senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) politician and Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, mentioned the matter before the bench.
The matter has now been posted for hearing on 5 April along with a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) by Adhikari.

Communal Clashes in West Bengal

Violence erupted in the Rishra and Shibpur areas of West Bengal on Thursday after two groups clashed during a procession on the occasion of Ram Navami (birthday of Lord Rama) on 30 March.
Several vehicles were set on fire and both public and private properties were vandalized. Soon after the clashes, Section 144 of Indian Penal Code (IPC) was imposed in the areas and the state police conducted a flag march too.
Later on Sunday night, fresh clashes erupted near railway gate number 4 in Rishra, disrupting train services along the Howrah-Bardhaman main line.
After the clashes, ruling Trinamool Congress and opposition party BJP were involved in a political slugfest. TMC chief and state chief Mamata Banerjee alleged that the violence was BJP sponsored and the BJP accused Banerjee of bias and said that the state authorities were providing security to Muslims only.

PIL Seeks NIA Probe Into Clashes

The PIL filed in the Calcutta High Court on Friday has demanded a probe be conducted by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on the matter, also calling for deployment of Central Forces in the violence-affected areas.

In his PIL, the BJP politician alleged that bombs were hurled during the violence and Advocate General SN Mookherjee, representing the state government, had said that the situation in Shibpur is under control.

On Monday, the bench directed the state government to file a comprehensive report on incidents of violence in Shibpur area in Howrah city and steps taken to ensure peace in the area on 5 April.
It also directed the state government to submit CCTV and video footage related to the incidents of violence.
The police were directed by the court to make adequate deployment as required.
