A court in the Patna District of India's Bihar state on Wednesday asked Congress politician Rahul Gandhi to physically appear before it in a defamation case on 25 April over his remark about Modi surname.The case is filed by BJP parliamentarian and former Bihar deputy state chief Sushil Kumar Modi.Earlier, Gandhi was granted bail by Surat Sessions Court.On 23 March, the Surat Magistrate court sentenced Gandhi to two years in prison in the Modi surname defamation case filed by a BJP member, Purnesh Modi.On Thursday, the Surat district court will hear Gandhi's application seeking suspension of his conviction.

Back in 2019, during an electoral rally, former Congress leader Rahul Gandhi drew a parallel between the surname “Modi” and criminals.
A court in the Patna District of India's Bihar state on Wednesday asked Congress politician Rahul Gandhi to physically appear before it in a defamation case on 25 April over his remark about Modi surname.
The case is filed by BJP parliamentarian and former Bihar deputy state chief Sushil Kumar Modi.
"Rahul Gandhi was to physically appear before the court today to record his statement under Section 313 of the CRPC. But he deliberately did not appear before the court. However, he is engaged in a rally in Kerala. So I prayed to the court to cancel his bail bond on the grounds of non-appearance," said counsels representing Sushil Modi.
Earlier, Gandhi was granted bail by Surat Sessions Court.
On 23 March, the Surat Magistrate court
sentenced Gandhi to two years in prison in the Modi surname defamation case filed by a BJP member, Purnesh Modi.
On Thursday, the Surat district court will hear Gandhi's application seeking suspension of his conviction.
