Uttar Pradesh state chief Yogi Adityanath has praised the Special Task Force team and other officials behind the shootout, his office said in a statement.
The son of gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed was killed on Thursday in the Jhansi district of Uttar Pradesh during a shootout with the UP's Special Task Force (STF).

Ahmad Asad, and his father's aide, who was also shot dead during the encounter, were both wanted in the murder of Umesh Pal, with the two carrying a reward of INR 500,000 each on their head.

The duo opened fire on the STF team first, and police returned fire, killing both of them. Sophisticated weapons, new cell phones, and SIM cards were seized from the criminals.
A total of 42 rounds were fired during the encounter.
On Thursday, Atiq Ahmed and his brother Khalid Azim were produced before a Prayagraj court in connection with the murder of Umesh Pal, who was shot dead outside his Prayagraj home on February 24.

Gangster-Turned-Politician Atiq Ahmad Convicted in 2006 Kidnapping Case
Atiq had previously approached the Supreme Court seeking protection, alleging that his life was under threat while in police custody.
"I want to tell the government that I have been reduced to dust," Ahmed told reporters. "Please don't trouble our women and children now."
Umesh Pal was the main witness in the murder of Uttar Pradesh lawmaker Raju Pal, in which Atiq was the prime accused. Pal was abducted at gunpoint in 2006. He was allegedly asked to change his statement before the court in the case.
