The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Delhi gives 200 units of electricity for free to households. Those using between 201 and 400 units, get a 50% subsidy. However, the facility is only available to those who opt for it.
The Delhi government on Friday said that power subsidies being enjoyed by 4.6 million households would be stopped on Saturday as Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena had failed to sign off on the transfer.
"From Monday onwards, people will get inflated bills without subsidy…the scheme which the Delhi government has put in place to benefit lawyers, farmers and families of the 1984 riots victims will stop," said Delhi Power Minister Atishi (who prefers to be called by her first name).
However, the LG office said that the Delhi government is being dramatic, as approval for the scheme was already given by Saxena on Thursday, and the file was sent to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday.
The LG also asked Atishi to "refrain from unnecessary politicking" and said her allegations were "baseless and fake."
The Aam Aadmi Party has allocated INR 3.25 billion for power subsidies in its 2023-24 annual budget.
