According to the police, members of the local Sikh community are responsible for mass shootings which have taken place in Gurdwaras (Sikh temples) in Stockton and Sacramento in August 2022 and March 2023.
California Police on Monday arrested 17 individuals allegedly involved in shootings in Sikh temples in Stockton, Sacramento, and other places, the state authorities said in a statement.
The police also confiscated arms, including AK-47s, one machine gun, and handguns in several raids conducted in more than 20 locations in the state.
The 17 arrests - most of whom were Sikhs - were made as part of a massive police operation carried out by sleuths in Northern California, a joint announcement from California Attorney General Rob Bonta, Sutter County District Attorney Jennifer Dupre, and Yuba City Police Chief Brian Baker stated.
Addressing the media, Dupre mentioned that of the 17 arrested, two people are wanted in India for carrying out mass killings in the South Asian country.
Bonta added that the arrested persons are members of rival criminal gangs who are said to be behind several violent attacks, including shootings and attempted murders, in Sacramento, Solano, Yolo, Sutter, Merced, and San Joaquin counties.
The authorities further noted that through these arrests the police prevented two more planned mass shootings from happening soon.
"Today, California is safer thanks to collaboration, determination, and swift action by DOJ agents and our law enforcement partners in Sutter County," Bonta said.
He emphasized that the operation took "guns off the street and put suspected gang members and their associates behind bars".
"An investigation of this magnitude requires a tremendous amount of time and effort, and especially a lot of personnel," Dupre concluded.
