India’s decision to hand over the probe to the its premier anti-terror agency was conveyed to the British authorities during the fifth India-UK Home Affairs Dialogue in New Delhi last week.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has taken over the probe into the vandalism and violence by pro-Khalistan supporters at the Indian High Commission in London last month, officials told Indian media on Tuesday.
The Special Cell of Delhi Police was previously investigating the case under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act. The UAPA is usually applicable to terrorism cases.
Under the Indian law, the NIA is mandated to investigate terror cases against Indian interests in foreign countries.

India Says Pro-Khalistan Entities ‘Misusing’ UK Asylum Status for Terrorist Acts
The pro-Khalistan protest in London on 19 March witnessed protestors vandalizing the Indian High Commission and trying to take down the Indian national flag, which was prevented by officials. The demonstration took a day after police in India's Punjab state launched a massive crackdown against radical Sikh preacher Amritpal Singh.
Two Indian officials were reportedly injured during the protest.
New Delhi has taken a strong exception to the incident, as it lodged a protest with the seniormost British diplomat in New Delhi just hours after the attack on the Indian High Commission.
The Indian government complained about the “complete absence of security” at the diplomatic mission to the UK authorities.
Amid the diplomatic row, UK’s National Security Advisor Tim Barrow also travelled to New Delhi last month to hold talks with his Indian counterpart Ajit Doval.
The issue also figured during the fifth India-UK Home Affairs Dialogue (HAD) in New Delhi, which was co-chaired by India’s home secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla and Matthew Rycroft, the Permanent Secretary at UK’s Home Office.
Indian foreign ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi told a media briefing last week that New Delhi wants to “see action on the ground” in terms of bringing to justice those responsible for the attack on the High Commission.
“We have been urging host countries, including the UK, to take action against those who vandalised the flag as well as the High Commission, identify them and take action against the perpetrators. We are certainly pressing them to continue to take measures to ensure security of premises, security-safety of our personnel who are there in London,” stated the Indian official.
