Gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf were gunned down by three assailants on Saturday in Uttar Pradesh's Prayagraj city while being taken for a medical check-up under police custody.
Uttar Pradesh state chief Yogi Adityanath has warned gangsters in the state days after the murder of Atiq Ahmed and his brother, saying that “now mafias cannot threaten anyone in the state."
The warning came while he was addressing an event to mark the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to set up textile parks in Lucknow and Hardoi districts.
“Before 2017, the law and order in the state was not good, but after that, there is a rule of law in the state. From 2017 to 2023, there have been no riots in Uttar Pradesh; there was no need for a curfew,” Adityanath said.

Currently, a professional criminal organisation or mafia cannot threaten an industrialist over the phone, Adityanath stated: “Those who were a threat to Uttar Pradesh… now Uttar Pradesh is a threat to them.”

The chief alleged that this is the most conducive opportunity to invest and set up industries in the state as law and order is guaranteed.

Atiq Ahmed's Killing: Security Ramped up in Uttar Pradesh Amid Fears of Tensions

Atiq Ahmed's Killing

Ahmed along with his brother Ashraf were killed in a shootout outside a hospital in Prayagraj city on Saturday night by three assailants identified as Lovlesh, Sunny and Arun Maurya.
The gangster and his brother were shot while they were being taken to medical check-up. They were both in police custody.
After shooting the gangster and his brother, the three assailants immediately surrendered to the police officials present on the spot and also shouted “Jai Shree Ram” (Hail Lord Ram).
The killing triggered strong criticism of the state’s law and order from opposition in the Samajwadi Party.
Security in all the 75 districts of the state was ramped up after the killing, fearing tensions. Adityanath also ordered the police to monitor social media and conduct 'flag marches' across the state. He also formed a three-member judicial panel to probe the incident.
Asking security forces to maintain law and order in the state, Adityanath said that strict action will be taken against those who spread rumors, and warned that people who try to disrupt the peace and harmony in the state won’t be spared.
