Muslims celebrate Eid al-Fitr on the first day of Shawwal, the 10th month of the Islamic lunar calendar. Despite Muslims being a minority group in the country, India ranks alongside Indonesia and Pakistan as having one of the world's largest Islamic populations.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday wished Indian Muslims a happy Eid al-Fitr and prayed for the health and well-being of all citizens.
In a tweet, Modi said, “Greetings on Eid-ul-Fitr. May the spirit of harmony and compassion be furthered in our society. I also pray for everyone's wonderful health and well-being. Eid Mubarak!”
Extending his wishes to the countrymen, federal minister Nitin Gadkari said in a tweet: “My best wishes on Eid-ul-Fitr. May this auspicious occasion strengthen the bonds of harmony and fraternity in our society. May the blessings of good health and prosperity be bestowed upon everyone.”
Former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi also offered his holiday greetings as he wrote in a tweet: “Eid Mubarak to everyone! May this auspicious festival bring peace, happiness & prosperity to all.”
Meanwhile, members of Muslim community from across the country offered namaz on the occasion. Muslims in huge number turned out at Jama Masjid in Delhi to offer namaz and hugged each other afterwards.

Meanwhile, people in Sangiote, a village in Poonch district in Jammu and Kashmir have decided not to celebrate Eid as an Army truck was attacked by terrorists on Thursday. The truck was carrying fruit and other supplies for an iftar gathering scheduled to be held in the village.
Earlier, President Droupadi Murmu, on the eve of Eid al-Fitr, greeted the citizen of the country and urged everyone to pledge to promote brotherhood, peace and harmony among themselves.
“Eid marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan. This festival spreads the feelings of love, compassion and affection. Eid gives us the message of solidarity and mutual harmony,” a statement issued by the Rashtrapati Bhavan quoted the President as saying.
This festival is imbued with the spirit of harmony and inspires us to build a peaceful and prosperous society, Murmu said.
“On this occasion, let's take a pledge to promote feelings of brotherhood and harmony in the society,” she said.
“On the auspicious occasion of Eid al-Fitr, I extend my heartiest greetings and best wishes to all citizens living in India and abroad, especially our Muslim brothers and sisters,” she added.
