The Delhi Police have launched a probe this week against the Wrestling Federation of India president over sexual harassment allegations leveled by female wrestlers.
The National Commission of Women (NCW) chief on Thursday requested that the Delhi Police file an action taken report regarding the sexual harassment complaints against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.
The allegations were brought by seven female wrestlers, including one minor.
While talking to the media, the NCW chief said: "We have written to the commissioner of Delhi Police, asking for an action taken report. We have also asked them why they have not registered a First Information Report (FIR) in the matter." "There were security issues of the complainants also involved as they did not want their names to be given out. That’s why we did not talk to the media about it."
Top Indian wrestlers including Asian and Commonwealth Games medalist Vinesh Phogat, Olympic medalist Bajrang Punia, Sakshee Malikkh staged a sit-in protest — the second one this year — against the WFI chief, who they accused of sexual harassment and financial misappropriation.
The grapplers also filed a petition with the Supreme Court on Monday seeking an FIR against Singh.
After the petition was filed, the top court listed the matter for urgent hearing and issued a notice to Delhi Police, who, however, told the Supreme Court that some kind of preliminary inquiry was needed before they could lodge an FIR.
