13,000 Doctors on Strike in Madhya Pradesh Demanding Better Facilities

Health workers and doctors have been protesting against the Madhya Pradesh government since February. About 2,000 contractual health department workers have been protesting since April 18 for various reasons.
Nearly 13,000 doctors and health workers on Wednesday launched an indefinite strike over a string of reasons that included facilities for colleagues posted in rural areas.
The demonstrators demanded an end to alleged bureaucratic interference and the restoration of the pension scheme, among other things.
The health workers held a similar protest in February, after which the government re-assured them it would address their issues through talks. However, after the failure of the talks, all different medical associations under the umbrella body of Madhya Pradesh Shaskiya Swashasi Chikitsak Mahasangh are holding demonstrations now.
The protest has affected outpatient services and other essential hospital work.
Meanwhile, State Chief Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Tuesday night held a meeting with bureaucrats, directing them to ensure the smooth operation of medical facilities in the state, reported Indian media.
The state government has also sought help from private hospitals and said that underprivileged or visiting patients' costs would be compensated to the hospitals.
The government is also hiring doctors from private medical facilities or clinics to run the government hospitals.
"Health services are essential services. There should be no hindrance in running such services. Leave no stone unturned for the smooth operation of emergency and critical services. This strike is unethical, there is a provision for action for this. Make necessary arrangements in medical colleges and hospitals and take services of PG doctors," Chouhan said in a statement released by his office.
He said doctors are considered a form of God to save human life and appealed to everyone involved to not play with human lives.
"We had withdrawn our agitation on February 17 on the assurance given by the state chief. But nothing was done… We are fighting this battle for the doctors working in rural areas. They work seven days a week without taking leave. We often get shifted to areas where we do not have basic minimal amenities, including school, housing, etc.," one of the protesting doctors told the Indian news agency PTI.
The demands of the agitating doctors will not put any financial burden on the state, he asserted.
