Microvascular surgery is a surgical technique for joining or repairing the damaged blood vessels and nerves during reconstructive surgery.
A 56-year-old man has had his tongue reconstructed through microvascular surgery after he was successfully treated for tongue cancer, doctors at Kalyan Singh Super Speciality Cancer Institute in India's Uttar Pradesh state said on Wednesday.
The patient had complained of non-healing ulcers and pain at the left lateral border of the tongue for about four months.
After consulting doctors and undergoing tests, he was diagnosed with tongue cancer after his histopathology report came out to be moderately differentiated Squamous cell carcinoma.
Despite the patient's critical condition - he suffers from chronic liver disease as well as diabetes mellitus type 2 - ENT Assistant Professor Dr. Indu Shukla successfully resected the tumor, while her colleague Dr. Mukta Verma performed the plastic and reconstructive surgery.
