The rise of AI-powered chatbots, like ChatGPT, and the advancement of AI in general, have stirred debate among experts over the possibility of whether AI can have consciousness.
Amid the rapid development of technology and machine learning, Tibetan Buddhist leader the Dalai Lama strongly believes that artificial intelligence (AI) cannot have consciousness and only living beings can possess it.
During the first international conference on animal consciousness in Himachal Pradesh's Dharamsala city, the 87-year-old Nobel laureate told Sputnik that only physical matter can give rise to consciousness.
Buddhist cosmology suggests that consciousness is infinite. “For a moment of consciousness to arise, it must be preceded by a previous moment of consciousness," the Dalai Lama said.
According to the Dalai Lama, the world appeared out of "empty space" because there were already living beings who were to inhabit a particular emerging universe.
"Living beings with consciousness and the ability to feel. Their inherent consciousness, way of thinking, and their desires led to the gradual formation of the material world, which, in turn, began to influence living beings and their desires," the Buddhist spiritual leader explained.
He also shared that daily training of the conscious mind can help people stay young and healthy.
"My face looks young because I am working on developing my consciousness and I always try to keep my mind calm," he signed off by saying.
