The assembly polls in the southern Indian state of Karnataka, home to 50 million people, will be held on May 10 in the 224 assembly constituencies. The result will be announced on May 13.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has objected former Congress Party President Sonia Gandhi's remarks about Karnataka state "sovereignty" on Monday by filing a complaint with the Election Commission of India (ECI).

Last Saturday, the Congress Party shared Gandhi's quote on Twitter saying that the party will "not allow anyone to pose a threat to Karnataka's reputation, sovereignty or integrity."

Her statement sparked criticism from BJP politicians, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
On Monday, a BJP delegation headed by Union Minister Bhupender Yadav submitted a letter to the Election Commission. It argued:
"Such a tweet is well-considered evil design to provoke the staunch nationalists, peace-loving, progressive and globally recognized people of Karnataka. The intent is to disturb the equanimity, harmony, and peace that obtains in Karnataka just to garner the votes and support of some select communities or groups, whose sole purpose and intent is to disrupt the very being of the Indian State."
The BJP has demanded immediate and firm action against Gandhi and the Congress Party.
