The Indian weather department has confirmed that a deep depression formed in the Bay of Bengal intensified into a cyclonic storm, which will reach its peak on Saturday evening.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) said on Friday that it has deployed its eight teams along the coast of West Bengal to deal with the outcome from Cyclone Mocha.
"We have deployed eight teams and 200 rescuers on the ground, and 100 rescuers are on standby," said NDRF commandant Gurminder Singh.
The cyclone is expected to make reach land in Myanmar on Saturday. However, India and Bangladesh will experience heavy rainfall in the regions adjoining it.
"Severe cyclonic storm 'Mocha' lay centered at 23:30 IST (18:00 GMT) 11 May 2023 south-east of the central Bäy of Bengal near latitude 12.7N, long 88.1E, about 510km west-northwest of Port Blair, 1050km south-southwest of Cox's Bazar (Bangladesh) and 970km south-southwest of Sittwe (Myanmar)," the India Meteorological Department (IMD) tweeted on Thursday night.
India's northeastern states of Tripura, Mizoram, and the Andaman Nicobar Islands will probably get heavy rainfall from Saturday. Nagaland, Manipur, and south Assam are expected to get rainfall on Sunday.
The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has also placed its units in the region on high alert.
Fishermen, ships, boats, and trawlers have been asked only to venture into the central and northeast Bay of Bengal and the north Andaman Sea on Sunday.
Those sailing in the central Bay of Bengal and north Andaman Sea have been advised to return to harbor.
