During the state visit of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi to New Delhi this January, both the countries elevated their overall ties to the level of “strategic partnership”.
A top Indian military expert has said that Egypt’s growing role in geopolitics, particularly in the Middle-East North Africa (MENA) region, is an important reason behind New Delhi stepping up its ties with the African nation.
"Egypt is a very important country. It is an old civilization. And right from times immemorial, we have had a very good relationship. And today, Egypt is again emerging as a factor of stability in that part of the world,” Major General (retired) BK Sharma, the Director of New Delhi-based think tank United Service Institution of India (USI), told Sputnik.
The Indian military veteran underscored that New Delhi was reviving its “old civilizational and political links” with Egypt.
Both India and Egypt were the co-founders of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in the 1950s. The NAM is a group of de-colonized and developing nations which chose to follow a policy of neutrality during the Cold War.
“And to that extent, I think more emphasis is being given to (ties with) Egypt (in the region),” Sharma noted.
The remarks come as Indian Army Chief General Manoj Pande is visiting Egypt to further bolster defence cooperation as well as increasing strategic coordination on regional and global matters, as per an Indian defense ministry statement.

Indian Army Chief Leaves for Egypt to Boost Strategic Coordination
During his two-day visit on 16-17 May, Pande is scheduled to hold talks with the Commander-in-Chief of Egyptian Armed Forces, Minister of Defence & Military Production, and Chief of Staff of the Egyptian Armed Forces.
India and Egypt are also closely coordinating on counter-terrorism matters, with both the leaders of the view that “terrorism is one of the most serious security threats to humanity”.

Strategic Significance of Egypt

The significance of Egypt to Indian interests came to fore last month as fighting broke out between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan.
Indian foreign minister S Jaishankar said that Egypt was one of the few countries with which India was coordinating as it mounted an evacuation effort to bring out from Sudan over 3,000 Indians and Indian-origin people from the conflict-torn nation.
"Discussed the concerning situation in Sudan just now with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry. Deeply value his assessments and insights, as also his very helpful attitude. Agreed to remain in close touch," Jaishankar tweeted last month after a telephone call with his Egyptian counterpart.
Egypt has maintained close ties with both the Sudanese forces and the RSF and was one of the countries mediating ceasefire talks between the two adversaries.
In terms of its location, Egypt controls the Suez Canal, a strategic waterway linking the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea.
The significance of the Suez Canal has grown since the start of the Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine last February, with a record number of western ships passing through the waterway as western powers looked for alternative sources of energy and commodities.
The Suez Canal Authority (SCA) has remained neutral in the Ukraine crisis and has allowed access to vessels of all nationalities, in spite of pressure from the western governments.
