Authorities have warned Assam Police personnel to either get fit within three months or take voluntary retirement.In a tweet, Director General of Assam Police G.P. Singh said that the Body Mass Index (BMI) of all personnel will now be recorded as per the directions of state chief Himanta Biswa Sarma.Last week, Singh informed that more than 650 personnel who are purportedly habitual drinkers or obese had beenidentified. Those found unfit for duty will be offered voluntary retirement after a thorough review, while those not willing to take voluntary retirement will not be given field duty.On April 30, Assam state chief Sarma strongly advocated for fittening up the police force in order to turn it into a responsive and action-oriented one.

15:46 16.05.2023 (Updated: 15:47 16.05.2023) Assam's state chief announced last month that around 300 state police who are habitual drinkers will be offered voluntary retirement as part of efforts to fitten up the force.
Authorities have warned Assam Police personnel to either get fit within three months or take voluntary retirement.
In a tweet, Director General of Assam Police G.P. Singh said that the Body Mass Index (BMI) of all personnel will now be recorded as per the directions of state chief Himanta Biswa Sarma.
He further said: “We plan to give three months to all Assam Police personnel including IPS & APS (Indian Police Service Officers and Assam Police officers) officers till August 15 and then start BMI assessment in the next fifteen days."
Police personnel who are in the obese category with BMI 30+ are due to be offered another three months to lose weight and, failing that, will be offered voluntary retirement.
Those who have genuine medical conditions such as hypothyroidism will be exempt from this measure.
The top cop also said that he will be the first to have his BMI taken.
