Former Prime Minister Imran Khan was ousted from power last year in April. Multiple lawsuits were then filed against him, including charges of corruption, terrorism, contempt of court, rioting and even blasphemy.
Pakistan's former PM Imran Khan said that police have surrounded his residence in Lahore on Twitter on Wednesday afternoon.
However, earlier in the day, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) restrained the arrest of cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan until May 31. The IHC also extended its order to prevent the arrest of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) chairman in cases filed against him after May 9.
The decision came after the government’s counsel requested more time to provide information.
The court also ordered the release of PTI politicians Maleeka Bokhari and Ali Muhammad Khan, terming their arrest “unlawful”. Both politicians were arrested under the Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance following violent protests in the country broke out after Khan’s arrest and left ten people dead and hundreds injured.
Khan was taken into custody on May 9 concerning corruption involving the Al-Qadir Trust, which he heads with his wife. The politician is facing an inquiry in the case related to a settlement between the PTI government and a property tycoon that reportedly caused a loss of 50 billion Pakistani rupees ($17.6 million) to the national exchequer.
Last week, the Supreme Court of Pakistan declared that Khan's arrest was illegal and ordered his immediate release till May 26. They also barred law enforcement authorities from arresting Khan until today.
