Experts suggested that the primary cause of displacement in South Asia is the deepening impact of climate change and extreme weather incidents.
South Asia has witnessed 12.5 million internal displacements, reads a report published by the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre.
Floods trigger 90 percent of the displacement in the Southeast Asian region, the report suggested. In total, natural disaster events, including cyclones, heavy floods, etc. impacted around 2.5 million displacements within India.
"All countries recorded flood displacement, but Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh were the most affected. Most movements occurred during the southwest monsoon between June and September," the report said.
In 2022, Pakistan witnessed a record-breaking flood in which hundreds of thousands were displaced and thousands died.
Similarly, India and Bangladesh experienced witness floods even before the onset of the monsoon season.
In May-June, five million people were reportedly displaced from the Indian state of Assam. The region is adjoining Bangladesh.
Cyclone Sitrang caused 66,000 displacements in India's Odisha and West Bengal states. Cyclone Asani triggered 1,500 displacements in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh and Cyclone Mandous caused 9,500 in Tamil Nadu.
The report also warned about extreme event incidents such as heat waves and floods, saying that their impact will drastically worsen in India.
According to the India Meteorological Department, India reported 2,227 fatalities due to extreme weather events in 2022, worse than in 2021 (1,750), or 2020 (1,338).
