The Indian Navy currently has 19 submarines in operation, including five new scorpene-class submarines. The sixth 'Vaghsheer' would join the force next year.
The Indian Navy's latest stealth submarine "Vaghsheer" began its sea trials on Thursday, the country's blue water force said in a statement on Friday.

"The sixth submarine of Project-75 commenced her sea trials on May 18," the statement issued by the Navy noted. "The MDL has delivered three submarines of Project-75 in 24 months and the commencement of sea trials of the sixth submarine is a significant milestone. The submarine will now undergo intense trials of all its systems at sea, these include propulsion systems, weapons and sensors," the statement added.

Vaghsheer is the sixth and final Kalvari class (called Scorpene class in defense parlance in Delhi) submarine, manufactured at the state-owned Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) in partnership with French shipbuilding giant DCNS.
Five of these submarines are already operated by the Indian Navy.

India Developing Submarine-Launched & Long-Range Land-Attack Cruise Missiles: Report
All these six conventional, diesel-electric attack submarines have been produced under the government's ambitious Project-75, wherein an Indian manufacturer had to collaborate with a foreign defense firm to build them at a local shipyard using indigenous components, which in this case was MDL and France's DCNS.
Among the stealth features that the six submarines have are:
an air-independent propulsion (AIP) system,
low radiated noise levels,
advanced noise silencing techniques,
anti-ship, anti-submarine,
anti-surface warfare capabilities, including the ability to carry out a lethal attack on the adversary with the help of its precision-guided munition.
Before Vaghsheer, the other submarines to be inducted as part of the program were INS Kalvari, INS Karanj, INS Khanderi, INS Vela, and INS Vagir.
The sea trials of the fifth submarine, INS Vagir, commenced in November 2020 before it was inducted into the Indian Navy in January this year.
After the completion of Project-75, India plans to build six submarines that would be larger than the Scorpene class of submarines under another project dubbed Project-75(I).
