In 2021, Wankhede raided a cruise party and arrested Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan's son for allegedly possessing and consuming drugs. Later, he was accused of extorting money from Khan to get his son out of jail.
India's Narcotics Department, in its vigilance report, has alleged that anti-drug officer Sameer Sameer Wankhede undertook six private foreign trips with his family to the UK, Ireland, Portugal, South Africa, and the Maldives over the course of five years -- from 2017 to 2021.
Wankhede, however, declared the money he spent on these trips, which lasted a combined total of 55 days, as INR 875,00 ($10,569), which according to the department, barely covers the travel fair.
He was the head of NCB Mumbai zone in 2021 when in October he raided a cruise vessel off Mumbai's coast and arrested Shah Rukh Khan's son Aryan Khan and his friends in the alleged drugs-on-cruise case.
Aryan, who spent four weeks in jail, was cleared of all charges by the anti-drugs agency in May 2022 due to a "lack of sufficient evidence." Weeks after Aryan Khan's arrest, reports claimed that Wankhede and others demanded a 250 million INR bribe for not framing Aryan Khan in the alleged drug bust.
In December 2021, the Mumbai Police constituted a SET (Special Enquiry Team) to investigate the extortion case.
Wankhede, however, has clarified that he stayed at his relative's place during his trip to London. Hence, there were no major expenses. The report mentions that he has various premium watches, and that one of his Rolex cost INR 2.2 million ($26,572). However, it was sold for a price of INR 1.7 million ($20,532).
The report also stressed his four apartments in Mumbai and 41,688 acres of land in Maharashtra's Washim district.
All these claims were made by the Special Enquiry Team (SET) of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), reported Indian media on Friday.
The Central Bureau of Investigation, the federal probe agency which is already investigating the case against Wankhede -- based its First Information Report on this report.
