The Quad Leaders’ Meeting was originally scheduled to take place at the Sydney Opera House on May 24, but had to be preponed after the US President cut short his visit.
Australian foreign minister Penny Wong has said that around $15 million (23 Million AUD) was “handed down” to the Quad and concerned officials for organizing the grouping's summit in Sydney.
She said the Australian government had allocated the sum for hosting the Summit in the federal budget.
“Well, I'm sure there'll be sort of accounting for costs, but we did allocate that amount of money in the Budget that was handed down to the Quad and associated with the associated work of officials and so forth,” Wong said on Wednesday.
She described Biden’s last-minute decision to cancel his Australia visit for the Quad summit as “disappointing but understandable” due to the “hyper-partisan” domestic politics in the US.
“It was really good that we still were able to have an engagement with Quad leaders, as well as a bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Albanese and President Biden,” Wong stated.
The Quad, which comprises Australia, Japan, India and the US, made last minute arrangements to hold a Leaders’ Summit in Hiroshima on the sidelines of the G-7 leaders’ meeting. The meeting was re-scheduled for 20 May.

Australia Cancels Quad Summit After Joe Biden Pulls Out Over US Debt Talks
The US President cut short his Indo-Pacific visit “in order to be back for meetings with congressional leaders to ensure that US Congress takes action by the deadline to avert default” by raising the debt ceiling from $31.4 trillion. Subsequently, Canberra announced that the meeting in Sydney had been cancelled.
Biden was originally scheduled to travel to Papua New Guinea for the US-Pacific US-Pacific Islands Forum meeting in Port Moresby on 22 May, followed by a visit to Australia.
US State Secretary Antony Blinken represented the US at the meeting with Pacific leaders in Papua New Guinea.
