Meet India's First & Only Woman Rafale Fighter Pilot to Guard Border With China
Hailing from Varanasi, a city in India's Uttar Pradesh state, Shivangi Singh joined the Indian Air Force in 2017. She was commissioned into the Indian Air Force's second batch of female fighter pilots.
Flight Lieutenant Shivangi Singh is India's first and only female pilot to fly the powerful Rafale fighter aircraft over the dangerous borders of the Ladakh region amid tensions with China.
Her remarkable feat underscores how the sky truly has no limits for those who dare to dream big.
"I have flown in that area and the aircraft performed as expected, and we have carried out all the missions that were entitled to us with utmost ease," Flight Lieutenant Singh said in an interview with the Indian news agency.
In 2020, Singh shattered the glass ceiling by becoming the
first-ever female fighter pilot to fly a Rafale.
However, to achieve this victorious feat, Singh had to undergo a strict selection procedure to qualify as a Rafale pilot.
Singh became the only female pilot in the two squadrons of the Rafale aircraft deployed in Punjab's Ambala city and West Bengal's Hashimara region.
Prior to flying the Rafale, Singh had flown a
MiG-21 Bison aircraft.
"I learned something new every step of the way, be it flying the MiG-21 Bison aircraft or the Rafale fighter aircraft," Singh added.
Singh was a part of the team from the Indian Air Force that participated in the Orion War drill held in France, where various other countries' military forces, including the US, the UK, and NATO, also took part.
Calling it a great learning opportunity, Singh expressed how participating in the multinational exercise allowed her to engage with fighter pilots from various countries, particularly those who were female pilots.
