South Africa, which chairs the BRICS group of emerging economies in 2023, hosted a meeting of the five member states' foreign ministers in Cape Town on Thursday, where the top diplomats exchanged opinions on perspectives for the group's expansion, among other issues.
A "Friends of BRICS" meeting is taking place in South Africa's Cape Town, in which, apart from the member states, 15 nations of the Global South are taking part.
One of the top topics for the meeting is preparations for the leaders' summit scheduled for August in Johannesburg, also South Africa.

On Thursday, Russia reaffirmed its unshakable position that there should be no states in BRICS that have joined the illegal policy of unilateral sanctions applied against Russia and other states, the nation's Deputy FM stated in an exclusive comment to Sputnik.

BRICS unites the world's largest developing economies — Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. A number of other countries intend to join the economic bloc, including Argentina, Iran, Indonesia, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt. South Africa, which assumed the rotating BRICS presidency in January, will host the 15th BRICS summit in August.

India Must Get ‘More Active’ in BRICS: Expert
Strategic affairs analyst Pravin Sawhney argued that although New Delhi, along with Russia and China, was one of the founding members of the BRICS grouping, it is punching below its weight as far as its role in the multilateral grouping is concerned.
“Although India is one of the founding members of the BRICS, it is viewed as pro-US. India needs to step up its role in BRICS, else its position won’t be liked by China or even perhaps Russia. India needs to get more active in the grouping else its role will diminish,” Sawhney told Sputnik.

Sudheendra Kulkarni, an ex-aide to late Indian leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee, explained that New Delhi should not fall in the “western trap” and abandoning its policy of strategic autonomy which has served it well since Independence.

“With the inevitable rise of India and China, the global domination of the West is coming to an end. Fearing this, western powers are trying to lure India into their camp in order to contain China. India must not fall into their trap. We should maintain our strategic autonomy from both the West and China, while espousing the interests of a peaceful and equitable world order,” he said.

The Cape of Good Hope joint statement underlined the “need for a comprehensive reform” of the UN and its organs, including its Security Council, in order to make it “more representative, effective and efficient”.
At the same time, the BRICS joint statement criticized “unilateral coercive measures”, including sanctions, boycotts, embargoes and blockades, by certain countries and said that such measures were producing “negative effects” on the Developing World.
Finally, the BRICS nations underscored the “importance of encouraging” the use of local currencies in trade settlements and international transactions, amid the ongoing trend by many developing nations in the Global South to move away from the US dollar.

Russian FM Optimistic About BRICS Rxpansion After Foreign Ministers' Meeting

"Here, in Cape Town, it is very important to compare our approaches on all these issues and also on the intra-BRICS agenda, first of all, with regard to the approach to the expansion of our association. We expect that the prepared joint statement on the results of the meeting, which was agreed by the Sherpas [envoys], will be a good contribution to the preparation of the declaration of the leaders of the Five in [South Africa's city of] Johannesburg in August," Lavrov told a joint press conference after the meeting of the BRICS foreign ministers.
