United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) Executive Director Erik Solheim has argued that India is proponse to the effects of climate change because of its population size. He went on to allege that India is more vulnerable to climate change than the United States."America and India have been facing the loss of natural resources, destruction of forests, extinction of several animal species," he said.Climate change is starting to affect a number of countries, the expert added.According to Solheim, in order to handle the ecological crisis, India should focus on investing in electric vehicles, manufacturing them and adapting the infrastructure to the use of such engines. He said that India could lead the world in producing electric vehicles. "The circular economy is the way forward, and so much is happening in this area. It will create new jobs, as well as bring down the stress from the environment."Solheim added that energy, transport, and circular economy were three major areas that needed to be focused on to reduce carbon emissions, and high indicators in this sphere would be a major step toward carbon-negative status, which the country seeks to achieve by 2070.

India passed China to become the most populous nation this year. However, in terms of area, India ranks seventh in the world.
United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) Executive Director Erik Solheim has argued that India is proponse to the effects of climate change because of its population size.
"India is particularly vulnerable to climate change because it has a huge population, and the natural conditions make it more vulnerable comparing to others," Solheim said while meeting with students during the Youth 20 (Y20) talk on the climate issue.
He went on to allege that India is more vulnerable to climate change than the United States.
"America and India have been facing the loss of natural resources, destruction of forests, extinction of several animal species," he said.
Climate change is starting to affect a number of countries, the expert added.
"If you take a global perspective — we saw floods in Pakistan last year, huge wildfires in America and Europe. In 2021, China witnessed massive floods, and a year before, they had a drought," the UNEP executive director said.
According to Solheim, in order to handle the ecological crisis, India should focus on investing in electric vehicles, manufacturing them and adapting the infrastructure to the use of such engines.
He said that India could lead the world in producing electric vehicles. "The circular economy is the way forward, and so much is happening in this area. It will create new jobs, as well as bring down the stress from the environment."
Solheim added that energy, transport, and circular economy were three major areas that needed to be focused on to reduce carbon emissions, and high indicators in this sphere would be a major step toward carbon-negative status, which the country seeks to achieve by 2070.
