India has been eyeing armed drone purchases from the United States to boost its military capabilities amid growing friction with China along its northern border.
The Indian Defence Ministry has cleared a mega-billion dollar contract for MQ9B-Predator drones from the US days ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's high-profile state visit to Washington, local media reported on Thursday.
Though the purchase has been approved by the ministry's Defence Acquisition Council, the final call will be made by the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), the country's highest body to decide on defense matters.

"The deal for the Predator drones was given approval by the Defence Acquisition Council [DAC] meeting today. The acquisition proposal will now have to follow a procedure after which it will have to be cleared by the Cabinet Committee on Security," news agency ANI said, citing a defence source.

India May Finalize Jet Engine Deal With US During Modi Visit: Report
The media outlet revealed that New Delhi would be acquiring 31 drones in total, with 15 going to the Navy, while the Army and the Air Force would receive eight apiece.

What Are Predator Drones Used For?

The Predator drones, also known as the Sea Guardians, are mainly used for reconnaissance purposes.
The Indian Navy is already operating two such UAVs, after leasing them from their manufacturer, General Atomics, in 2020 following a border standoff with China in the Ladakh sector.

The agreement between the two sides, however, is expected to be finalized during Modi's visit to the White House.

The Indian leader is scheduled to visit Washington from June 21 to 24.
