With robot-assisted surgery, doctors have received a clear and magnified view, almost 10 times more accurate, of an affected area, allowing them to carry out surgical procedures more easily and successfully.
A man in his 60s has got a new lease of life following a successful robot-assisted surgery that removed a cancerous mass from his kidney in a hospital located in Noida city in India's Uttar Pradesh state.
In a media statement, the doctors said that the patient had been experiencing abdominal pain. After medical tests were done, it showed a tumour located in the renal hilum -- the medial part of the kidney where all the blood vessels and the urinary tract are located.
The doctors decided to perform robot-assisted surgery that went on for four hours, and they managed to remove the cancerous tumour.

"The location of the cancerous mass in the patient's kidney was such that it made regular laparoscopic surgery extremely difficult. Advanced robotic-assisted technology was used since a doctor's hands could not reach the area", Dr Dushayant Nadar, director of urology and renal transplant at Fortis Hospital, Noida said.

According to Dr Nadar, while the surgery went smoothly and the patient's condition is now stable, delaying the removal of the cancerous mass would have caused extensive damage to the kidney, possibly resulting in the complete removal of the organ.
