Delhi's Mukherjee Nagar area is well-known for private coaching institutions, where thousands of aspirants go every year to prepare for entrance exams for government jobs.
A fire incident at a coaching centre in Delhi's Mukherjee Nagar area on Thursday prompted several students to rappel down using wires.
According to the Delhi police, four students received minor injuries while climbing down the multi-storey building.
In videos that have gone viral on social media, students can be seen escaping through the window of their coaching centre using wires. Some of them safely climb down as smoke emerges from the floor.
A girl was also seen jumping out of the window to land on top of an air conditioner below, while others were seen throwing their bags down.
According to media reports, 11 fire engines were sent to the venue as firemen helped many students get away from the building safely.
Talking to the media, Delhi Fire Service (DFS) Director Atul Garg said: “A call about the fire was received at 12.27 p.m. (IST) and a total of 11 fire tenders were pressed into service”.
He further added that the fire broke out due to an electric meter.
Meanwhile, Delhi police PRO Suman Nalwa said: “A few students received injuries as they were escaping from the building under fire. No person is trapped in the building. The fire broke out in the electricity meter of the building and smoke caused the panic”.
