Cyclone Biparjoy, which made landfall in Gujarat, has weakened into a deep depression and is likely to further weaken into depression in the next 12 hours, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Saturday.The weather department further said the cyclone weakened into deep depression at 11:30 p.m. (IST) on Friday over Southeast Pakistan.“Cyclonic Storm Biparjoy weakened into a Deep Depression at 2330 hours IST of yesterday, the 16th June, 2023 over Southeast Pakistan adjoining Southwest Rajasthan and Kutch about 100 km northeast of Dholavira. To weaken further into a Depression during next 12 hours,” the IMD said in a tweet.After making landfall in Gujarat, the cyclone named after Bengali word for disaster or calamity wreaked havoc in Gujarat as more than 500 trees were uprooted in Kutch district of the state due to the impact of the cyclone.It also toppled electric poles due to which almost 940 villages were left without power.A National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team had carried out the clearance work on Friday in the state.Six NDRF teams had carried out a rescue operation in the affected areas and at least 94,000 people were relocated from the coastal and low-lying areas to shelter homes.The state government is also working on providing relief to the people in the affected areas and State Chief Bhupendra Patel is regularly holding meetings with local officials.
