Prolonging the fighting in Ukraine benefits the US-led West's commercial interests, a strategic and military analyst has told Sputnik.Major General (Ret.) West Cashes in on Dragging Out Ukraine Conflict, Expert Says
A delegation of African leaders, led by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, unveiled their 10-point peace plan during a visit to Kiev and Moscow last week. Russian President Vladimir Putin told the top-level visiting emissaries that Moscow has “never rejected” holding talks.
Prolonging the
fighting in Ukraine benefits the US-led West's
commercial interests, a strategic and military analyst has told
Sputnik.
Major General (Ret.) Shashi Bhushan Asthana, the Director of New Delhi-based think tank United Service Institution (USO) of India, noted that major American defense contractors had seen their profits surge as a consequence of rising demand since Moscow began its special military operation last February.
The stock prices of major American defense companies such as
Lockheed Martin, Raytheon and
Northrop Grumman have jumped since last year, amid a surge in demand for products such as Javelin, Stingers and
High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS).
The United States alone has committed military aid to the tune of $30.4 billion to the Kiev regime since last year. Moreover, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has said that arms and related supplies to Ukraine have cost the members a whopping $165 billion since last year.
US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has vowed that NATO allies would support Ukraine for “as long as it takes”.
Meanwhile, Kiev has rejected Moscow’s direct offer for talks to end the conflict and has contended that “restoring” Ukraine’s territorial integrity is not up for negotiations. Russia has maintained that its security guarantees haven’t been respected, which compelled it to conduct the special military operation in the first place.
US Controls 'Escalation Dynamics' in Ukraine Conflict
Asthana stated that Moscow was forced to launch its military operation due to “repeated flagrant violations” by NATO of its previous commitments not to push the bloc close to Russia’s eastern frontiers.
“The escalation dynamics in the Ukraine conflict are being controlled by Washington. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is just a puppet of the West,” Asthana stated.
Asthana underscored that besides cashing in on the Ukraine conflict, American and Western defense companies were also milking the Ukraine crisis to try and cut the
global share of Russian defense exports, as publicly acknowledged by the Biden administration.
Moscow ranks as the second-biggest defense exporter globally, with countries such as India being the largest importer of Russian arms and defense systems.
Asthana also noted that the US energy industry was pulling in enormous profits as American companies are replacing Russian ones in the European market.
US crude exports to the EU have hit a record high this year, amid declining imports from the Russian Federation, against the backdrop of the G7’s economic restrictions and sanctions against various sectors of the Russian economy.
Owing to the EU's decision to cut its Russian-produced energy imports, Moscow has been prompted to divert its energy exports to countries
such as India and China, both of them significantly ramping up their energy intake from the Russian Federation.
Mediation Efforts by African Leaders
The comments by Asthana come as a South Africa-led delegation made up of emissaries from Senegal, Egypt, Zambia, Uganda, the Republic of Congo and Comoros concluded their visits to Ukraine and Russia in a bid to achieve a ceasefire.
“The mission was impactful. Its real success would be measured on the ultimate objective of stopping the war,” said South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, the head of the mission.
He noted that the brunt of the “negative consequences” of the Ukraine crisis, in terms of rising energy, food and fertilizer prices, were being felt by African nations and other low and middle-income states in the Global South.
“We are probably the only group which has engaged the two leaders,”
Ramaphosa stated.
Asthana describes Africa’s mediation efforts as “noble” and “praiseworthy”.
“Unfortunately, these efforts won’t be able to achieve the desired outcome as Washington doesn’t seem interested in ending the conflict. What’s needed is direct talks between Russia and the US,” the Indian military veteran suggested.
He noted that middle-powers such as India and Turkey have also cautioned over the crisis' negative effects on global economic stability, particularly in the Global South.
China, for its part, has also proposed its own peace plan to end the crisis.
