Indian Home Minister Amit Shah is set to convene an all-party meeting on Friday (June 24) to discuss the communal clashes that have been running rampant in the northeastern state of Manipur since May 3.The Home Ministry announced the meeting after Himanta Biswa Sarma, the state chief of Assam, in the country's northeast, met Federal Minister Shah in New Delhi, earlier this week.Sarma, who is also the convenor of the National Democratic Alliance’s Northeast Chapter -- NEDA (the North East Democratic Alliance) -- visited Manipur's capital city, Imphal, on June 10, where he met Manipur State Chief N. Biren Singh and several political leaders.Meanwhile, earlier this month, Home Minister Shah also visited the state and met with many officials and members of numerous political parties.According to expectations, Shah will brief opposition parties on the state's condition and might seek their support and proposals on how to handle the crisis.Clashes in ManipurThe violence in Manipur erupted in early May after clashes broke out between two tribal communities -- the Kukis, who mostly live in the hill districts, and the Meiteis, the dominant community in Imphal.The primary reason behind the clashes is that the Schedule Tribe (ST) status was granted to the Meiteis there, which infuriated the Kukis.But other underlining tensions in the state, among them a long-standing insurgency, illegal drug farming and trade, illegal migration from Myanmar through the porous borders, pressure over land, and a lack of employment opportunities, have all further escalated the strife.Meanwhile, the state government has suspended Internet service (as a preventive measure to curb violence or stop rumors from spreading) and imposed a curfew. Nevertheless, both communities are now indulging in violence on a daily basis.Federal Home Minister Shah also visited Manipur earlier and tried to bring together a peace committee in the violence-rocked northeastern state in a bid to reach a truce among various ethnic groups.However, members of both communities refused to be part of the committee, citing a lack of faith in the initiative.

For 50 days, the state of Manipur has been rocked by deadly clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities. The violence has left at least 100 people dead and more than 500 wounded, besides displacing over 60,000 individuals.
