Meet The Businessman Who Quit The Corporate Jungle To Indulge His Love of Yoga
With more than a decade of experience as a yoga guru, Akshit Chawla, 31, launched Genix Yoga to teach many others the art of healthy living and transforming their life through this ancient Indian practice.
He breathes, eats, and sleeps in a
modern-day yogic lifestyle and is always ready to
experiment with different yoga asanas with a more scientific and modern approach.
With a background as a national tennis player and a B.Tech in Electronics, Akshit Chawla from Delhi began his professional career as an entrepreneur and co-founded a manufacturing and retail lighting start-up.
Chawla spent more than eight years in the corporate world before he underwent a life-altering experience that inspired him to leave his
corporate career and devote himself entirely to the
practice of yoga.“There's nothing better than practicing yoga and following Ayurveda. These practices work on the microcellular parts of our body and if we see the modern science, there's a lot of help that we can take from that knowledge as well for our overall wellbeing,” Chawla told Sputnik.
“Yoga works at every level. If you are suffering from any disease, any injury, any ailment in the body, yoga works on the root cause of it. And to get better and make a better lifestyle, we should really work on the root cause. And there's no better practice than yoga that can heal you faster from diseases or ailments,” he added.
Chawla was introduced to yoga long ago at the age of 13. But never in his wildest dreams did he imagine that he would be teaching yoga full-time one day.
“It has been almost 18 or 19 years since I started yoga. I began with meditation and went on to the physical aspects of yoga later in my life,” Chawla said.
The biggest turning point in his life came in 2019. He was experiencing a lot of anxiety but just a one-hour yoga session changed his perception completely.
Since then, there has been no looking back.
“After that experience, I started practicing yoga regularly and also took up a teacher-training course. I wanted to dive deep into the yogic knowledge. I started teaching and imparting knowledge to one or two people, just with the other professional work that I was doing at that time,” Chawla said.
In 2020, when the whole world was reeling under the COVID-19 pandemic, Chawla visited an ashram - yoga centre - and got stuck there for almost a year because of the lockdown. However, this turned out to be the best time to pursue his passion full-time.
"I learned, I taught. And once I came back from the ashram, I decided to teach yoga full-time. And that's what I have been doing ever since,” Chawla said.
As he looks back on his time as a guru, Chawla feels that by practicing yoga he has made himself grow much stronger mentally, and has achieved a deeper understanding and experience.
“This is one thing I would recommend to everyone: that if you really want to get better in your day-to-day lifestyle, you should practice yoga. Because what we learn on the mat is something which we carry forward off the mat,” Chawla shared.
Daily Practise is the Key
As the world celebrated International Yoga Day on Wednesday, Chawla feels that doing yoga just for a day or for a week to mark the occasion is not enough. "One has to continue doing yoga to reap the actual benefits from this practice."
Taking that first step to start doing yoga every single day is the key, Chawla advised.
Asserting that the first sutra (formula) of yoga is ‘Ath Yog Anushasan’ (now is the time to start yoga discipline), he said: "There is no better time than now. Don't wait for that perfect moment to start your practice. We need not be flexible, we need not be strong. Just get into the practice and start practicing daily. Don't wait for that right moment.”
After a decade of practicing yoga, Chawla reckons that he is now living life with a sense of deep purpose and fulfillment, and through Genix Yoga, he is helping many others who have undertaken the same path to experience the same.
