The State of Global Air report, published in August 2022, said New Delhi is one of the most polluted cities in the world.
Delhi's State Chief Arvind Kejriwal turned his attention on Saturday to the city's air quality, noting that despite all the hardships, significant progress has been made to improve the situation.

"This was perhaps the most difficult task - improving air quality. But a series of steps taken by Delhi residents helped us achieve this seemingly impossible task. Still, there's still a long way to go. But Delhi people have always done what others thought impossible," Kejriwal tweeted.

Kejriwal's tweet came after Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) on Friday said that in the first half of 2023 - from January to June - Delhi air was the cleanest it has been for the past eight years, except for 2020, the year the first Covid-induced lockdown was imposed.
The average Air Quality Index (AQI) for Delhi during this period also remained in the 'moderate' category - below 200.
Between October to February every year, for several days the city reported an AQI higher than 401.
