The demolition of a temple and a mazar was carried out by the Public Works Department on the orders of Delhi’s lieutenant governor.
Two religious buildings in India’s capital city Delhi were demolished peacefully on Sunday amid heavy security.
According to media reports, the demolition of the religious buildings - a mazar and a temple - which began around 6 a.m. (IST) will make way for the construction of a flyover as part of the widening of a highway.
The Public Works Department (PWD) removed the mazar (a place where Muslims offer prayer) and a temple of Lord Hanuman from the main road in New Delhi's Bhajanpura as an anti-encroachment drive early on Sunday morning.
The Delhi police said that before demolishing the religious structures, talks were held with residents and local leaders. A final decision to proceed with the demolition was taken at a “religious committee” meeting held a few days ago.

While talking to the media, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Joy N Tirkey said: “Both structures were removed peacefully. This was planned a few days ago but the local leaders here had asked the civil administration for some time to prepare and make some necessary arrangements”.
“Today, we spoke to all of them and after having a proper dialogue with them, both the religious structures were removed from here with everyone's cooperation. Even the devotees came here and worshipped here before the removal of the religious structure. The temple was removed by the priest himself”, he added.
Meanwhile, a video of a cop praying to Lord Hanuman before starting the demolition has also gone viral on social media.
Soon after the demolition, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) politician and Delhi government minister Atishi lashed out at the lieutenant governor of Delhi, V.K. Saxena, for the action.
In a tweet in Hindi, she wrote: “LG sir: A few days ago, I had written a letter requesting you to withdraw your decision to demolish temples and other religious places in Delhi. But today a temple in Bhajanpura was demolished again. I request you again to ensure that temples and other religious structures are not demolished in Delhi. People's faith is attached to them”.
