The educational partnership is also in line with India's National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which recommends that “high-performing Indian universities will be encouraged to set up campuses in other countries."
The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT M) will establish its first campus abroad in Zanzibar, Tanzania. The campus is expected to open in October 2023 and will house 50 undergraduate and 20 master’s students in its first batch.
It came about following a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the education authorities of the two countries in the presence of the President of Zanzibar Hussein Ali Mwinyi and Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Thursday.
As part of the MoU, the academic programs, curricula, student selection aspects, and pedagogical details will be by IIT Madras, whereas the capital and operating expenditure will be met by the government of Zanzibar-Tanzania.

“Witnessed the signing of the agreement on setting up of IIT Madras Zanzibar campus," Jaishankar tweeted, who is on a four-day visit to the African nation to hold high-level talks and co-chair the 10th Joint Commission Meeting with his counterpart.

This education tie-up will not only enhance India’s diplomatic relationships but also signify a significant expansion of one of the top IIT institutions beyond Indian borders.
"This campus is reflective of the longstanding friendship between India and Tanzania and a reminder of the focus India places on building people-to-people ties across Africa and the Global South," the MEA said in the statement.
IIT Madras degrees will be awarded to the students enrolled in this campus.
"This unique partnership will bring the top-ranked educational expertise of IIT M to a prime destination in Africa and serve the imperative current needs of the region."
