Sri Lankan Parliament Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena on Saturday praised India for offering a helping hand to the neighbouring country during its unprecedented economic crisis last year.After Colombo defaulted on its sovereign debt of $51Bln in March 2022, India provided $4Bln in emergency aid to Colombo, including a $1Bln credit line.Expressing gratitude to India for standing with Sri Lanka while its situation was critical, Abeywardena described its much larger neighbour as a "trustworthy friend" whose assistance helped prevent a "bloodbath" in his country.His whole-hearted praise for the world's largest democratic nation comes at a time when relations between New Delhi and Colombo have witnessed an improvement in recent months.As well as offering a much-needed financial package, including credit lines, India and Sri Lanka have been collaborating in the defence sector with the former helping the latter in enhancing its maritime surveillance capabilities.On the economic front, Sri Lanka has been making efforts to restructure its loans secured from foreign countries and multilateral agencies.In March, Colombo secured a $3Bln bail-out package from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to spur financial activity in the country.

The island nation of Sri Lanka, located to the south of India, experienced its worst economic crisis since independence last year and suffered a sovereign default.
Sri Lankan Parliament Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena on Saturday praised India for offering a helping hand to the neighbouring country during its unprecedented economic crisis last year.
After Colombo defaulted on its sovereign debt of $51Bln in March 2022, India provided $4Bln in emergency aid to Colombo, including a $1Bln credit line.
Expressing gratitude to India for standing with Sri Lanka while its situation was critical, Abeywardena described its much larger neighbour as a "trustworthy friend" whose assistance helped prevent a "bloodbath" in his country.
"I must tell you, during the trouble that we had last year, [India] saved us, India saved us. Otherwise, there would have been another bloodbath for all of us. So, that is how India came to help us," Abeywardena said during a public event in Colombo.
"And, even this time, today, I heard that India is willing to extend our restructuring of loans for 12 years which is totally unexpected. Never before has a single country extended that kind of assistance," he added.
