India’s national capital city Delhi is witnessing a flood-like situation as the water level of the Yamuna river continues to increase after reaching an all-time high.According to officials, the water level of the Yamuna was 208.57 meters, more than three meters above the danger mark, at 11 a.m. (IST) on Thursday as Hathnikund barrage in Haryana continues to release water into the river.The water level of the river is at an all-time high, breaking the record level of 207.49 meters set in 1978.The sharp rise in the water level of the river has hit metro services and traffic in the city. In a tweet, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) informed that Yamuna Bank metro station is inaccessible.“Due to the escalating water levels of the Yamuna River, the approach road leading to Yamuna Bank Metro Station is currently inaccessible. Kindly plan your journey accordingly and consider alternate routes. However, interchange facility is available,” the DMRC wrote in a tweet.The Yamuna Bank metro station acts as a transfer point between Noida and Ghaziabad, neighboring cities of the national capital.The metro corporation also said that trains are passing all Metro bridges at a restricted speed even though services are normal.Apart from metro services, the traffic in the city has also been crawling since morning as various roads were closed and the route was diverted.The Delhi Police have also issued an advisory to the general public saying that traffic movement is affected on some roads and advised commuters to avoid certain routes.In its advisory, the police said the traffic movement is affected on Ring Road due to overflow of sewer water near the IP flyover from Rajghat to the Nizamuddin roadway. They further advised commuters to take an alternate route via Shanti Van, Rajghat, JLN Marg, Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg to avoid the stretch.As the water of the river entered the roads of the city, several areas such as Ring Road in the Civil Lines have experienced flooding. The situation has led to the closure of the stretch connecting Majnu ka Tila with Kashmiri Gate. The area has is located just 500 meters away from Delhi State Chief Arvind Kejriwal’s residence and the Delhi Assembly.Videos of roads submerged in water at different locations of cities are surfacing on social media.The Delhi State Chief has also ordered the closure of all schools and colleges till Sunday after a meeting of the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA).Some media reports also suggest that the capital city might face a scarcity of drinking water as three water treatment plants have been shut down. Kejriwal has said that attempts are being made to normalize the water supply as soon as the waterlogging clears.In another advisory, the Delhi Police further informed the citizens that the movement of commercial vehicles will be regulated and urged them to follow the advisory to avoid any inconvenience.The water level in the Yamuna River has been rising as water is been released continuously from Hathnikund barrage in neighbouring Haryana state. However, as per the media reports the water discharge is likely to reduce later in the day.The barrage has filled up due to very heavy rain further north in Himachal Pradesh. The monsoon has brought large-scale destruction in the hill state, bringing down homes and sweeping away bridges.
