Bangladesh is witnessing a surge in dengue cases as the country records the highest single-day rise of related deaths to 19, while 1,792 people were hospitalized with the fever, the country’s Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said.According to the DGHS, 146 people died of dengue infection in 2023.As the dengue outbreak looms over the entire country, Bangladeshi Health Minister Zahid Maleque said that the number of patients infected with dengue in Bangladesh is five times higher if compared with the number of cases registered during the same time last year. The health minister also said that the situation may worsen before September.Meanwhile, the media reported that the South Asian country is reporting 500-700 cases daily and many hospitals in Dhaka are seeing a shortage of beds and patients are being treated in hospital corridors.South Asia is usually used to witnessing dengue during July–August; however, several researchers have shown that mosquitoes are now able to breed throughout the year, which is attributed to climate change.

Every year during or after the monsoon, many developing South Asian nations witness a spike in deadly cases of dengue, a water-borne tropical disease spread by mosquitoes.
Bangladesh is witnessing a surge in
dengue cases as the country records the highest single-day rise of related deaths to 19, while 1,792 people were hospitalized with the fever, the country’s Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said.
According to the DGHS,
146 people died of dengue infection in 2023.
