'Shoot & Forget:' How Fast is the Oniks Missile?

Subscribe
The Onyx missile, also known as Oniks, is a formidable weapon in Russia's arsenal.
One of the most notable features of the P-800 Oniks, also known as the Russian Brahmos, is its incredible speed.
It can reach speeds of over 3,000 km/h, making it extremely difficult to intercept. Additionally, the missile operates at an altitude of 10-15 meters above land or water, further enhancing its stealth capabilities.
The versatility of the Onyx missile is evident in its ability to be launched from various platforms: the rocket can be fired from submarines, ships of different sizes, stationary and mobile coastal defense systems, as well as aircraft.

Shoot & Forget Principle

The Onyx missile is a self-guided munition, designed with the "shoot and forget" principle in mind.
Unlike some other missiles that rely on extensive target data, the Onyx missile requires minimal information about its target to strike it successfully. This feature allows the carrier to leave the firing position immediately after launch, minimizing the risk of detection and counterattacks.
The "shoot and forget" principle of the Onyx missile ensures that once it is launched, it can operate independently without further guidance from the operator. This capability allows the launching platform to focus on other tasks or quickly retreat to safety.
