The Andaman and Nicobar Islands, also known as India’s archipelago, are located in the eastern part of the Bay of Bengal. The Union Territory consists of roughly 572 Islands, however, only 38 are inhabited, with a population of 430,000, mostly tribals.
An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.8 hit the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the wee hours of Saturday, said the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). No casualties or injuries have been reported so far.
Earthquakes above magnitude 5 are considered to be "moderate" but capable of causing damage to poorly constructed buildings.
NCS further said that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 69 km.
This is the second quake reported in the month and the fourth this year. Earlier, on July 9, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.3 hit the Southeast of Campbell Bay in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
