On the 10th day of Muharram, known as Ashura, the Shia Muslim community mourns the martyrdom of Hussain, grandson of Prophet Mohammad, in the battle of Karbala on Muharram. The community generally holds processions, with participants wearing black clothes, chanting "Ya Hussain," and beating their chests.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday paid tribute to Hazrat Imam Hussain, saying "his courage and commitment to the ideals of justice and human dignity are noteworthy."
Muharram is a sacred month for Muslims all over the world. It also marks the first month in the Islamic calendar.
Usually, Middle Eastern countries such as Saudi Arabia, Oman, and the UAE sight the crescent moon a day before the South Asian countries like India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia and Morocco (in North Africa).
