In August 2008, when the entire world was watching the opening of the Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, the Georgian Armed Forces, trained in line with NATO standards, tried to capture South Ossetia. The Regime of ex-Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili launched massive artillery shelling on the sleeping population of the republic in violation of international agreements on the peaceful settlement of the Georgia-South Ossetia conflict. Afterwards, the Georgian Special Forces invaded South Ossetia, as well as stormed the positions of Russian peacekeeping forces located in the suburb of Tskhinvali. Dozens of people, including Russian citizens, were murdered by Saakashvili regime.Georgia's aggression was not left unanswered. In order to protect the people of South Ossetia and Russian citizens, who were there at the time, Russia conducted a peace enforcement operation. Afterwards, Russia recognized the sovereignty of South Ossetia and Abkhazia to provide them stable security and prosperity.
