Russian Logistics Giant Floats New Route from Belarus to India, China
Belarus is an important source of fertilizers for both India and China. Trade between India and China was over $223 million in 2022, while Belarus-China trade stood at $5.1 billion the same year.
FESCO, the largest private transportation and logistics company in Russia, has launched a multimodal route connecting Belarus to India, China, and Vietnam through the port of St. Petersburg, the company said in a statement on Tuesday.
The Russian company said that the new route involves transportation of goods through a railway line from Vitebsk (Belarus) to St. Petersburg.
Once at the Russian port, FESCO’s “deep sea shipping lines” will transport the Belarusian goods to the ports of Nhava Shiva (India), Shanghai and Ningbo and the Vietnamese port of Haiphong, the statement said.
It added that products from Belarus could also be delivered to other markets in southeast Asia through a “transshipment” facility at Ningbo.
The transit time of the entire stretch is around 50 days, the company said.
“The new intermodal route is focused primarily on manufacturers from the Republic of Belarus, who can transport their goods at an attractive cost and in optimal time thanks to a small railway shoulder, bypassing the loaded eastern landfill, and FESCO's own marine services, within which we provide customers with guaranteed capacity on our ships,” said German Maslov, FESCO’s Vice-President for Linear and Logistics Division.
First Belarusian Shipment to Arrive in Shanghai
The company's statement also informed that the first shipment from Belarus is scheduled to arrive in Shanghai this week.
It said that the shipment, containing Belarusian lumber, left Vitebsk on June 20 and arrived at St. Petersburg on June 22.
The shipment left St. Petersburg for Shanghai on June 30.
Since last year, Russia and Asian countries have redoubled efforts to
boost multimodal connectivity between the two regions.
The governments are also involved in fully activating the International North South Transport Corridor (INSTC), another multimodal transport route running from St. Petersburg to India and southeast Asia through central Asia and Iran.
